A2P Compliance for Agencies: The Do’s, Don’ts, and Must-Know Tips

If you’ve ever tried to navigate A2P 10DLC compliance, you know it can feel like trying to read legal documents in a foreign language—confusing, and downright exhausting.

But if you’re using SMS as part of your marketing or client outreach, compliance isn’t optional. It’s a must.

Mario Aldayuz, Head of Partnerships at HighLevel, broke it all down in a recent Zoom session.

He walked through common A2P compliance pitfalls, shared some golden strategies, and made the whole thing feel way less intimidating.

Why A2P Compliance Trips People Up

It’s no secret that A2P compliance has become one of the biggest pain points for agencies.

Between new regulations, shifting carrier requirements, and vague rejection reasons, even experienced marketers are getting tripped up.

According to Mario, the two biggest reasons A2P campaigns fail are:

  1. Poorly worded (or missing) SMS consent checkboxes on opt-in forms. If your opt-in forms don’t clearly state that users are agreeing to receive SMS messages, you’re setting yourself up for compliance issues.
  2. Mismatched legal business names. If the business name in your A2P registration doesn’t match the legal documentation on file, carriers may reject your application without a second thought.

How to Fix It (Before It Becomes a Problem)

Mario’s advice? Take a proactive approach instead of waiting for carriers to flag your campaigns.

Here are some actionable steps to keep your SMS workflows compliant and running smoothly:

1. Use Two Separate Consent Checkboxes

Many agencies make the mistake of bundling email and SMS consent into one checkbox.

Bad idea. Instead, add two distinct checkboxes—one for SMS, one for email—and make sure your language is crystal clear about what users are agreeing to.

2. Double-Check Your Business Registration

Carriers aren’t messing around when it comes to verifying businesses.

Make sure that your A2P registration details (legal name, EIN, address) match exactly what’s listed in your official business documentation. Even a small discrepancy can lead to rejection.

3. Audit Your Existing SMS Workflows

Think of this as a routine check-up for your automations.

  • Are all your opt-in forms compliant?
  • Are your workflows properly tagging and segmenting users?

Running an audit now can save you from compliance nightmares later.

4. Leverage Compliance Tools

If handling compliance manually makes you want to pull your hair out, tools like Termly.io can streamline the process by generating compliant terms and conditions, privacy policies, and consent language for your opt-in forms.
