One of the latest “power features” that’s got folks pumped—but also stumped—is Custom Objects.
They sound amazing in theory. But in practice? Let’s just say it’s not quite plug-and-play.
In this week’s live HL Pro Tools troubleshooting call, Andrew—a super sharp, power-user-type—brought up a tricky situation involving automating custom object relationships.
Let’s talk about what happened, how we fixed it, and what you can do to work around the current limitations without pulling your hair out.
The Problem: Custom Objects Aren’t So… Customizable (Yet)
Andrew was working with two types of data:
- Properties (custom object)
- Landlords (contacts)
He needed to automatically link properties to the right landlords inside HighLevel. Easy, right?
Not so fast. Turns out, there’s no built-in way to associate custom objects with contacts via workflows. Which means… manual input. Every. Single. Time.
A few groans were heard. We’ve all been there.
The Solution: The “Boomerang Hook” Trick
Here’s where it gets fun. Mario (our resident HighLevel whisperer) dropped a clever workaround we’ve started calling the Boomerang Hook 🪃.
How it works:
- 👋 When a contact is added (or updated), fire a webhook that sends their info out to an external script.
- 🧠 That script does the work of matching or generating the correct custom object (in Andrew’s case, the right property).
- 🔙 Then it immediately sends a POST request right back into HighLevel’s API, linking the object to the contact.
So you’re using the API to do what workflows should be able to do—but can’t (yet).
Yes, it’s a hack. But it works beautifully.
