Let’s be honest—HighLevel can do a lot, but e-commerce isn’t exactly its strongest flex right now.
Still, if you’re running a cupcake empire (like Becky from our recent HL Pro Tools Zoom call 🍰), or helping clients sell physical products with variants and add-ons, I’ve got you covered.
Becky dropped a killer question in the session:
“How can I let customers choose add-ons, like sprinkles or extra frosting, without confusing the checkout flow?”
Spoiler alert: HighLevel doesn’t do product variants and add-ons natively yet.
But I’m gonna show you the exact workaround Mario (our in-house mad scientist/genius) shared—and how to make it work for you and your clients today.
The “Add-On Hack” You Can Set Up Right Now
Here’s what we recommended (and what Becky is now doing like a boss):
Instead of trying to force multiple product options into one listing (which HighLevel isn’t built for), you treat add-ons as separate products. 🎯
Example:
Let’s say you’re selling:
- Chocolate cupcakes 🍫
- Vanilla cupcakes 🍦
- Optional add-ons like sprinkles, extra frosting, or filling
Instead of:
One mega-product with a dozen complicated dropdowns…
Do this:
✅ One product: “Chocolate Cupcake”
✅ Separate product: “Add Sprinkles”
✅ Separate product: “Extra Frosting”
✅ And group them in a collection called “Customize Your Cupcake”
Add clear instructions at the top of the store page like:
📝 “First, choose your cupcake. Then scroll down to add your extras!”
It’s not Shopify-level dynamic, but it totally works, and your customers won’t even notice the hack if you style it right.
Why This Works
✨ It gives the buyer full control over customization
✨ It avoids trying to duct tape unsupported features
✨ It’s easy to update, test, and scale
And yes, you can even track orders with add-ons and manage inventory as if they’re standalone SKUs.
A Few Warnings Before You Go Wild
Let’s keep it real—this isn’t perfect. So a few quick tips to avoid issues:
🛑 Don’t promise features HighLevel doesn’t natively support
✅ Use external tools like Shopify or Square if you need advanced cart logic
🧪 Test every flow with real users before launching
Action Steps to Try This Today
If you’re ready to set this up, here’s the quick checklist:
🔹 Create individual products for each add-on
🔹 Use clear naming like “Add Sprinkles (for any cupcake)”
🔹 Group all core products + add-ons into a single category or funnel
🔹 Style the store layout to guide users step-by-step
And just like that—you’ve got a cupcake store that sells and converts. 🧁💸
