How to Master HighLevel’s Versioned API

Key Takeaways

  • Imagine pitching a massive enterprise client.
  • You sell them on a completely custom integration bridging their legacy software directly into HighLevel.
  • Your development team builds it, it works beautifully, and you collect a massive setup fee.

Imagine pitching a massive enterprise client. You sell them on a completely custom integration bridging their legacy software directly into HighLevel. Your development team builds it, it works beautifully, and you collect a massive setup fee.

Six months later, the client calls you in a complete panic. The integration broke. Leads are dropping into the void.

Why? Because your team built it on outdated, unversioned APIs, and the endpoint structure finally changed. You are bleeding trust, scrambling to rewrite code, and the client is threatening to churn. Building custom software without version control and proper API limits is a ticking time bomb.

HighLevel just completely upgraded their API infrastructure to prevent this exact nightmare. With versioned documentation and clear V2 endpoints, your developers can finally build stable, scalable custom apps. Let’s get your dev team on the right track.

Part 1: The V1 Sunset and API Key Changes

If you are still building on V1 APIs, you need to pivot immediately.

V1 APIs reached end-of-support on December 31, 2025. Your existing connections will still function, but absolutely no support or updates will be provided moving forward.

You must migrate your builds to V2 APIs (Private Integrations) to unlock massive new functionalities and enhanced OAuth 2.0 security features. Additionally, HighLevel is removing the ability to generate new API keys from both Agency and Sub-account settings for accounts not currently using them, further pushing the standard toward secure OAuth connections.

Part 2: Navigate the New Versioned Documentation

You cannot build world-class integrations using outdated reference material. The legacy Stoplight documentation is being fully deprecated. Ready to streamline this? Here is exactly how to do it in 60 seconds:

  1. Send your development team to the new official hub at https://marketplace.gohighlevel.com/docs/.
  2. Tell them to use the version switcher located inside the documentation.
  3. They can select the exact API version they want to reference to view endpoints, schemas, parameters, and examples.
  4. Use older API versions when maintaining your existing production integrations.
  5. Review the newer versions when you are planning upgrades or building fresh applications to ensure total stability.

Part 3: Understand Your Access Levels and Rate Limits

Your API power depends entirely on your HighLevel plan and how you manage your traffic.

If you are on the Starter or Unlimited plan, you get Basic API access, which restricts you to Location API Keys. If you upgrade to the Agency Pro plan, you unlock Advanced API access, giving you powerful Agency API Keys and access to future OAuth 2.0 endpoints.

HighLevel also implemented strict rate limits on V2 public APIs to keep the system lightning-fast. Your burst limit is 100 API requests per 10 seconds per resource. Your daily limit is 200,000 API requests per day per resource. Tell your developers to monitor response headers like ‘X-RateLimit-Daily-Remaining’ so your app never crashes from throttling.

Part 4: Where to Get Developer Support

HighLevel standard support does not provide setup code auditing or developer consultative services. If your developers hit a wall, they need to leverage the community.

Tell your team to join the official developer Slack group at https://developers.gohighlevel.com/join-dev-community. If your setup is completely correct but an error persists, submit a bug report via the developer support form. If you need a brand new endpoint that does not exist yet, submit your request directly to the HighLevel GitHub Issues page.

Stop letting bad API management break your enterprise deals. Get your devs on V2, respect your rate limits, and scale your custom solutions safely.

Cool Free Thing

Before creative entrepreneurs hand over their marketing budget, they demand undeniable proof that your agency can actually perform.

Testimonials bridge that massive trust gap faster than any sales deck on the market.

The fatal flaw is that most operators just hope their happy clients will remember to leave a review, leaving their most powerful sales assets scattered in old text threads and buried emails.

I am handing you the exact, automated pipeline my internal team relies on to systematically extract, polish, and organize client wins so they are locked and loaded for your next pitch.

Simple. Repeatable. Bulletproof.
